„Mauthausen - Tags and numbers”

Every detainee had to wear tags with numbers and identification symbols. For example, the political enemies were labeled with a red triangle, the criminals with a green triangle, the Jewish people with the star of David, the homosexuals with a pink triangle, the gypsies with a brown triangle.

Neutralized Zyklon B (also spelled Cyclon B) - the infamous gas that was used by the SS troops in the holocaust to gas their prisoners in the concentration camps. Ironically, it was developed as an arsenic-based insecticide by Dr. Fritz Haber, a German-Jew in 1920. Just a couple of years before, he was awarded with the Nobel prize in chemistry! He died in 1934, one year after he had to[...]

One of the crematorium ovens where dead bodies were burnt after death. There was no funerals or whatsoever. "Prisoners that worked in the camp crematory were relieved and replaced every three weeks. The prisoners that were replaced were then killed by shots through the neck because they knew too much." (MAUTHAUSEN CONCENTRATION CAMP, Kendra Dickinson [SOURCE])

The dissecting table was the place where the SS doctors were performing experiments such as removing organs from living people. The inmates with interesting tattoos, were marked before entering the gas chamber and then their skin was cut off and used as book covers, gloves or whatsoever. Golden teeth were also removed on this table.

The Mauthausen gas chamber was ready in the spring of 1943, and until the may 5th 1945 liberation it has gased almost 3500 people. To avoid panic, it was designed as a shower, an ordinary bathroom. The door that lead to the gas chamber had a hole that allowed SS forces to watch the prisoners die, live. "While most inmates were killed by shooting, hanging, beating, starvation, and[...]

The scaffold. 'nuff said.

„Mauthausen - Barracks interior”

The barracks. If in the past, they were filled with beds, today only a few were still kept. Too bad, because it reduces the feeling a nazi concentration camp should give you the moment you visit the barracks. The bed you see in the top image was designed for four detainees. Two down and two on top. For a better fitting, they were sleeping with the heads at the other one's feet.

„Mauthausen - The bunker”

The bunker was the last place a detainee would have wanted to go. These dark, isolated rooms, with sometimes no furniture, beds or whatsoever, only a bucket for the personal needs were mainly inhabited by the political prisoners. There were 33 cells and some of the detainees were kept here for more then a year. Others, only for days until after the interrogation (which was always[...]
