LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Tony award-successful playwright Terrence McNally, recognized for plays like “Love! Valour! Compassion!” and for musical edition of “Kiss of the Spider Female,” died on Tuesday of difficulties associated to the coronavirus, his consultant explained.

Matt Polk explained McNally, eighty one, died in a clinic in Florida. The Broadway theater veteran was a lung most cancers survivor and experienced lived with a long-term respiratory ailment.

McNally’s job spanned 6 decades, encompassing plays, musicals and operas. It ranged from AIDS dramas “Lips With each other, Enamel Aside,” to domestic drama “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune,” and the stage musical adaptation of movie “The Complete Monty.”

He was supplied a lifetime accomplishment award at the 2019 Tony Awards ceremony in New York, introducing to the four he gained for “Love! Valour! Compassion,” “Master Class” and the textbooks of the musical versions of “Ragtime” and “Kiss of the Spider Female.”

McNally is survived by his spouse, producer Tom Kirdahy.

Tributes poured in from the theater globe on Tuesday.

“Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda explained on Twitter he was heartbroken, calling McNally “a huge in our globe, who straddled plays and musicals deftly.”

Previous “Rent” star Anthony Rapp known as him “a vital voice in American theater, especially productive at lifting up and amplifying the American LGBTQ experience.”

Peter Marks, theater critic at the Washington Post, tweeted “This virus is having good people away. Terrence McNally was a learn with course.”

Broadway theaters have been shut considering that March 12 because of limits aimed at stopping the distribute or coronavirus.
