Sonia Boyce will fill the British pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2021

Artist Sonia Boyce is to come to be the very first black lady to depict Good Britain at the prestigious Venice Biennale following 12 months.

Boyce will fly the flag with a significant new exhibition at the world’s most crucial present-day art pageant.

She informed BBC Radio 4’s Now programme that the present arrived as “a real shock, but a real delight as perfectly”.

The London-based mostly artist rose to prominence in the nineteen eighties as one of the main lights in black British art.

Her art has often dealt with themes of race and gender, originally doing work with pastels and then transferring into pictures, video clip, audio and installations.

“That early perform in the nineteen eighties was extremely much about me currently being the centre of a large amount of those photographs that I was building, and I would often discuss about rising up in the Uk, currently being black and currently being feminine, and what it was like at that unique time,” she informed Now.

Her wallpapers function prominently in her most recent exhibition, In the Castle of My Skin

For her most recent exhibition, at Eastside Jobs in Birmingham, titled In the Castle of My Skin, she has crafted what she explained as a “ridiculous composition” in the gallery to present her wallpapers and the perform of 7 artists with whom she has collaborated.

Emma Dexter, director of visual art for the British Council, explained the committee experienced picked Boyce at “a pivotal minute in in the background of the Uk”.

She explained: “They really loved the truth that Sonia delivers men and women alongside one another. Her exercise is extremely collaborative.
