LH: From Bermuda to China, this sort of wildly distinct physical and cultural environments. Does each and every spot have a importance in your artwork?
GH: My artwork is impressed by my Bermudian heritage. The colours, the vibrancy, the psychological enchantment, are all impressed by escalating up in Bermuda. Becoming absent from household has profoundly brought me nearer to it, to who I am. The juxtaposition of currently being in China evokes me to seem at myself with clarity.
When you obtain yourself in a different tradition, you are forced to look at your have. Becoming outside of household, guides me to obtain a household inside of myself it presents a mirror that reflects back truth of the matter.
LH: Your design and style is a exclusive fusion of components. Can you describe how you arrived at this and what has knowledgeable this creative path?
GH: I arrived at the collages organically. Really, I in no way intended anybody to see them. I started off collaging when I became annoyed with portray, and they had been intended to be innovative stores in my studio.
But immediately they took on a lifestyle of their have. The collages are really much linked to a form of engage in that I engaged in when I was a child, building paper people today. These are the adult variations of my childhood imaginations. When I start out a collage, I have no notion what it will seem like. The artwork unfolds as I assemble so there’s an aspect of discovery.
LH: Has your creative follow been influenced by a certain artist, mentor, or encounter? If so, be sure to clarify.
GH: I’ve been impressed by Bermudian artist Sharon Wilson she has encouraged me to dig further inside of myself which has in transform strengthened my follow. Artists should really be ready to attract a direct line in between their lives and their artwork.
This, for me, has required a further stage of introspection, meditation and solitude to obtain out who I am, what I want to say, and why it’s critical. My discussions with Ms. Wilson have challenged and impressed me so much.
