For 100 several years, the University of Michigan Faculty of Social Perform has made an affect educating the up coming era of social work leaders, advancing social justice and producing progressive change. Considering that 1921, Michigan Social Work has been deeply dedicated to addressing the most important issues dealing with our society which includes structural racism, social justice and financial inequality.

As aspect of the centennial celebration, Spike Lee and Terence Blanchard will headline the new Social Justice Changemaker Lecture Sequence. Stories have the electric power to encourage dialogue, modify impression and inspire men and women to action. Spike Lee and Terence Blanchard will share how to introduce new audiences to social justice through film, music and artwork.

Spike Lee is an award-successful writer, director, actor, producer and writer who revolutionized the position of Black expertise in cinema. Widely regarded as a premiere filmmaker, Lee is a forerunner in the “do it yourself” faculty of unbiased movie. Lee acquired an honorary degree from U-M in 2011.

Terence Blanchard is a jazz trumpeter, composer and music educator. He is a repeated collaborator with Spike Lee. He is nominated for a 2021 Academy Award for the score from “Da 5 Bloods.” Blanchard holds an endowed chair with the Detroit Symphony.

The Social Justice Changemaker Lecture sequence delivers well known experts and advocates from several disciplines — which includes social sciences, science, humanities and the arts — to the University of Michigan to deal with urgent social justice concerns. The lecture collection was proven by a generous present from Neil and Annemarie Hawkins.
