Encanto’s We Don’t Talk About Bruno becomes highest-charting Disney animation song of all time

  • Encanto’s We Don’t Talk About Bruno is no1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • The song joins A Whole New World as the second Disney animation song ever to reach the no 1 spot.
  • The song is not eligible for an Oscar.

Disney’s 2021 animated movie, Encanto has hit a new record – it now has the highest-charting Disney animation song of all time.

Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, We Don’t Talk About Bruno made history this week as the second Disney animation song ever to reach the no 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The first was Aladdin’s iconic A Whole New World, performed by Brad Kane and Lea Salonga.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the only other Disney hits to come close to reaching the top spot in the US are Elton John’s Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King and Vanessa Williams’ Pocahontas song Colours of the Wind, which both also reached No. 4 on the chart.

While We Don’t Talk About Bruno is at the top of the charts, there is a second hit from the Disney movie that has been submitted to the Oscars.

The emotional Spanish song Dos Oruguitas was named as a potential contender for this year’s award show instead due to nomination restrictions instilled, thanks to Late lyricist Ashman and composer Menken who have created some of Disney’s most iconic songs.

Speaking to E News, Miranda explained: “It’s a product of Ashman and Menken’s success actually. They were so good, and they were running the table so long at the Oscars that there’s actually an Alan Menken rule.”

According to the rule, two songs can be submitted in the Best Original Song category. Miranda added that they ended up only submitting one song because, “the goal is always to, sort of, submit what you think best represents the film as a whole. And, for us, Dos Oruguitas really is the heart of the movie.”
