A partnership among The Minimal Theatre and the Rochester Affiliation of Black Journalists, the Black Cinema Sequence is an ongoing month to month film collection celebrating the two documentary and narrative kinds of black cinema from around the world. In honor of Black Record Month, the collection will double up in February with two film screenings and post-film discussions. 1st up is “Waves,” Trey Edward Shults’s sprawling drama about the bonds of adore and forgiveness witnessed via the life of a middle-class, black, American family. That film will be proven Friday, February seven, at 6:thirty p.m., with a Q&A dialogue to follow.

Then on Friday, February 21, at 6:thirty p.m., the collection will display screen the documentary “Mama Africa: Miriam Makeba,” chronicling the daily life of the South African singer. Just one of the first African musicians to acquire intercontinental stardom, Makeba’s songs melded art and activism with her roots in apartheid-era Johannesburg and classic Xhosa lifestyle. The Minimal Theatre, 240 East Avenue. $4 to $nine. 258-0400 thelittle.org.
