Johnny Depp: Dispute over finger injury at centre of The Sun libel case

How Johnny Depp missing the prime of his middle finger is proving important to a libel scenario he has brought from The Solar.

The actor is suing publisher Information Group Newspapers (NGN) above a 2018 article that alleged he was violent and abusive in the direction of his ex-wife Amber Read.

At a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, the newspaper group said he sustained the injury through “an alcoholic beverages and drug-addled rage from Ms Read” in 2015.

But he statements his finger was fractured when she threw a glass bottle at him.

The pair achieved in 2011, married in 2015 and settled their divorce out of courtroom in 2017.

Ms Read, who is supplying proof in aid of The Solar, has accused her ex-partner of grabbing, shoving and strangling her whilst they have been on holiday in Australia.

She statements he “severely wounded his finger, chopping off the prime” whilst he was smashing a phone from a wall, according to NGN’s barrister Adam Wolanski QC.

But Mr Depp statements Ms Read threw a glass bottle at him, which smashed and fractured his finger, prior to she place “a cigarette out on [Mr Depp’s] right cheek”.

Mr Wolanski said the accounts of what occurred have been “diametrically opposed” and claimed Mr Depp’s version of events was undermined by texts he later despatched to his health care provider.

Penelope Cruz and Winona Ryder have provided published statements that specific shock and shock at seeing him characterised as violent.

In accordance to Mr Wolanski, Ms Read believes her ex-partner is “leaking proof which he thinks supports his scenario into the push”.

It will be decided at another preliminary hearing on Friday whether or not the two-week demo will start on Monday.

Neither Mr Depp nor Ms Read attended Wednesday’s hearing.
