“I have browse for parts that were literally for a caucasian [actress] and have … nothing at all to do with me getting a major black woman. None of that,” she reported. “I generally think that possibly I can adjust people’s minds and totally improve the character. I imagine it’s all about a feeling, about connecting … with the dialogue and setting up the character’s lifestyle outside of the webpage.

“Once you do that, the sky’s the restrict.”

Monica and Simone share a laugh (for now) in “Single Black Female.”

Riley, 35, who played Mercedes Jones on the Fox series “Glee,” mentioned she shares comparable sentiments, specifically as it applies to the songs industry.

I was a classically experienced singer.

“But because I was a excess fat black girl it was like, ‘Oh, no this is who you have to be.’ And I fought towards that.”

Riley not too long ago made it obvious that she does not want to be called “Mercedes” on Twitter soon after someone repeatedly referred to as her by her character’s identify on “Glee.”

“I did a song with R&B singer Eric Bellinger many years ago termed ‘Never Be Lonely,’” she explained. “I don’t forget likely on YouTube since I did a songs movie for [the song] and an individual said, ‘Man her voice does not match her face. I was wanting to know why the major female was in the movie but then I recognized that was her voice.’

“I just assumed that was so attention-grabbing and I said, ‘I’m heading to carry on to sing this way so that persons will see me.’”
