Robbie Shakespeare, just one fifty percent of the powerhouse rhythm duo of Sly and Robbie, has died.
A near affiliate confirmed his passing to The Gleaner a small although ago.
Shakespeare had reportedly been ailing for some time and experienced undergone surgical treatment associated to his kidneys. He was residing abroad and was in medical center in Florida.
In July last 12 months, he placed at Selection 17 on ‘The 50 Best Bassists of All Time list’, compiled by the prestigious Rolling Stone journal.
When The Gleaner reached out to the Grammy award-profitable bassist at the time, he reported he was humbled by the recognition,
“Bwoy, I respect the actuality that other folks looking in can see what we are accomplishing for the new music. This would make me really feel like a little one.” The A-lister, whose fingers have lovingly stroked the chords on quite a few hit tunes for artistes, such as Gwen Guthrie, Grace Jones, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Bob Dylan and Peter Tosh, spoke passionately of the worth of tough work even though subtly throwing shade at the ‘entitlement’ society.
“No issue how much people today hail Sly and Robbie as the legends, and despite two Grammy wins and 11 nominations, we by no means at any time really feel like something we get in life, we will have to get it. There have been a great deal of sleepless evenings and ‘eatless’ evenings, too. Nuff time we go to bed hungry, so we keep in mind these issues and get stock. There are so many other wonderful bassists out there who they could have preferred, and nonetheless they chose me, and I am grateful,” Robbie Shakespeare told The Gleaner.
