SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — An art show at Shepherd College showcasing acrylic canvas paintings of Black gals who have produced considerable contributions to record is ending Saturday.

“Physical and Non secular Bodies” pays tribute to 9 women who have excelled in record, civil legal rights, sciences, math, training, arts, engineering, drugs, small business and sports activities. Between the gals featured are revolutionary mathematician Katherine Johnson and tennis star Serena Williams.

“In my paintings, I demonstrate figures that signify a fusion of Black women’s private and cultural ties to the four features — earth, air, hearth, water — as very well as the void, or impressive energy encompassing one’s soul,” artist Chiquita Howard-Bostic explained in a news launch.

Howard-Bostic chairs the Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Prison Justice and serves as affiliate vice president for diversity, fairness and inclusivity at Shepherd.

The Scarborough Library show began on April 4 and will close Saturday. The artwork can also be uncovered practically on the library’s internet site.

“The illustrations or photos are fearless, attractive, and reveal an incredible visual artist with a strong message to us all about the resiliency and ability of Black ladies,” mentioned Sylvia Bailey Shurbutt, director of the Middle for Appalachian Experiments and Communities.
