Boaters and these on the waters around Vancouver are requested to consider safety measures as an injured whale has been spotted swimming close by.
Ocean Smart stated in a news launch today (April 14) that a humpback whale was observed with a deep slice in its tailstock. The damage is thought to be a strike wound from a vessel.
The whale experienced been observed in waters around Stage Gray because early April. Even so, a whale viewing vessel crew photographed the whale on April 11 with a deep laceration driving its dorsal fin.
Ocean Sensible, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Prince of Whales, Ocean Ecoventures, and the Humpback Whales of the Salish Sea Task are checking the whale.
Jessica Scott, an Ocean Intelligent applied investigation biologist and B.C. Cetacean Sightings Network supervisor, defined
“Humpback whales are especially prone to ship strikes simply because they show random vacation styles, remaining submerged for over 15 minutes in some instances, and simply because of their inclination to feed at the surface” Scott said. “They can floor instantly and without the need of warning. For both equally boater and whale protection, it is significant to function vessels diligently in places of acknowledged whale density, and to maintain an eye out for indicators of whale presence, these as blows, splashes, or aggregations of birds. Boaters have been seriously wounded by collisions with humpback whales in British Columbia.”
