An exhilarated “I did it!” just about sums up singer-change-actress Jovi Rockwell’s response to producing her performing début in Traytown, a film that explores interactions with rather a little bit of politics, enthusiasm and drama thrown in.

Its synopsis states, “Ambitious, recently-wed politician Aria Sawyer is a charismatic and eye-catching young lady who is soon after 1 detail – a seat in Parliament – and she gets it. Even so, the sweet style of victory quickly grows sour when her ability-hungry husband, Dimitri, finds out about her on-and-off affair with Janelle Rose, a spunky feminine journalist. He provides a trade – his silence for her seat in Parliament.”

For Jovi, who is nicely recognized in tunes circles, and has made a mark with solo singles as perfectly as a collab with Shaggy, Mr Vegas and Ding Dong, getting supplied the prospect to work with the film community has been a lifetime-modifying practical experience. “Just to be a section of a job in which everybody is Jamaican, I found anything new in my personal backyard. There was so a great deal intricate element, but every little thing was on issue, and all people was specialist. We have been capturing slices of daily life in its continuity, and in this article I was emotion incredibly a great deal a part of this local community that I did not know substantially about,” Jovi, just one of the primary people of Traytown, mirrored.

As she similar, her segue into acting was really fairly pedestrian. She was going for walks down her block a single working day and handed the performing university. An idea germinated she acted upon it. “I made a decision that I could be totally free each Friday to show up at courses, and that was it. They launched me to a variety of textbooks that started my inventive juices flowing, and as I opened up, I met a new part of myself, and it was interesting. I had no plan that I would arrive to Jamaica and land a role in a film. That was the magnificent spice for me,” Jovi informed The Sunday Gleaner.

Her journey to Traytown commenced at a Xmas bash in 2019 when she achieved the producer and co-director, Nadean Rawlins, who just occurred to mention that she was doing auditions for the movie. Jovi communicated her desire, and a handful of months afterwards, a star, as they say, was born. “Nadean literally just popped into my universe, and the stars aligned. I had just had my child in November, it was Xmas, and I explained to myself that I preferred to go for this,” she recalled.

She bought the script and bonded. The producing was excellent, and although the like curiosity concerned “a scandalous appreciate triangle”, she was intrigued. She packed her bag, headed to Jamaica for the audition and snagged the purpose to participate in the charismatic, appealing and recently-married Aria Sawyer, who is soon after a person matter – a seat in Parliament. But the film also sees her “challenging society’s ideals of love, acceptance and womanhood”. And Jovi also bought a probability to use her musical capabilities, as she did first new music for the movie and also wrote the song.

Doing work with Rawlins and the crew, she reported, was a great discovering encounter. “Nadean would notify me ‘Jovi, I’m still observing you’. So, I went again and termed up a several folks who I take into consideration type of stoosh, simply because I had to embody them, and I experienced to operate on that UPT accent. I advised them that I wanted a muse, so above a couple of lunch dates, I would check out very little factors like how they held the wine glass and things like that. But it was pleasurable, and we all had a good giggle,” she shared.

When she saw the finished item, she was blown absent and viewed it a million moments. “I considered it looked so cinematic. I felt really proud as I watched every person, Gabrielle, Ramon, who performed Dimitri. He was the joker on set, but when it came time to movie, he was all qualified. I am searching ahead to the sequence and undertaking more work, probably even finding in on the crafting. It’s something that I desired to do for a very long time, but perhaps I was way too chicken for it,” she stated.

Traytown is created by Letay Williams and directed by Nadean Rawlins and Gareth Cobran.
