Filmmaker James Gunn wanted ‘Scooby-Doo’ character Velma to be ‘explicitly gay’

A Twitter account for a movie podcast implored Gunn to make future onscreen iterations of Velma homosexual, to which Gunn replied, “I tried!”

“In 2001 Velma was explicitly homosexual in my original script” (for 2002’s stay-motion “Scooby-Doo’), he wrote. “But the studio just retained watering it down & watering it down, turning out to be ambiguous (the variation shot), then nothing (the launched variation) & ultimately acquiring a boyfriend (the sequel).”
